Update January 22: Funeral Services for Mike Barclay will be held at St. James Episcopal Church in Alpine, on Wednesday, January 23 at 11 am. The service is open to the public. Due to limited seating at St. James, the Barclay family will hold an additional memorial service later in the Spring for those wishing to honor Barclay's life and pay their condolences. Information on the latter service will be forthcoming.

Attorney Mike Barclay of Alpine was killed on Wednesday (January 16) after his truck rolled off of TX 17, according to the Alpine Daily Planet. DPS officials report that the accident occurred as Barclay lost control of the vehicle on a curve. The truck reportedly overturned several times before colliding with a fence. Officials declared Barclay dead at the scene.

Barclay was recognized by the Texas Bar Association in 2008 for over 50 years of service.

Brewster County officials released the following statement regarding Barclay's death:

We at the Brewster County Courthouse are saddened to learn of the passing of Alpine attorney Mike Barclay on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013.

The tied off chair is a tradition when we lose a member of our Brewster County Courthouse family.

Mike was loved by everyone in our courthouse family – prosecutors, defense attorneys, judges, probation officers, clerks, all of us – and he will be missed.

He was funny, charming, empathetic, and worked hard for his clients. He was one in a million, and had earned his very own chair at the table.

We know he is enjoying a “Field of Dreams” where there are no cheap seats or rain delays.

Our deepest sympathies to his wife, Barbara, and all of his family and friends.

Barclay is survived by his wife Barbara and son Jake.
