Holiday Programs for Saturday, December 24

christmas-presents-under-the-tree

Twas the day before Christmas and all through the house...radio dials were turned to KRTS 93.5 FM! Marfa Public Radio is playing holiday music and specials all day to accompany your last minute gift wrapping and cookie baking. Here's a look at what's on the air.

5 AM to 7 AM, Handel's Messiah - A classical holiday favorite.

10 AM, Choirs and Carols - Hear musicians from around the world in NPR’s performance studio as they share special holiday moments. Join us for ancient harmonies from Trio Medieval, traditional carols from the Riga Dom Boys Choir, and a rarely heard Christmas song by Sibelius, straight from Finland’s YL Choir. The Pittsburgh Brass unpacks a pair of 500-pound bells to ring in the holiday, and the members of Trio Voronezh tune up a balalaika or two.

11 AM, Jonathan Winters reads A Christmas Carol – An updated version of a public radio tradition by NPR. Master comedian Jonathan Winters presents a distinctive reading of Dickens’ holiday classic, with a special performing edition prepared by Dickens for his own presentations. Also featuring Mimi Kennedy. From NPR and KCRW.

3 PM, A Soul Christmas - Hear some of the greatest Soul and R&B holiday winter classics ever recorded. On this show you will hear Christmas tunes from James Brown, Otis Redding, The OJay’s, Donnie Hatthaway, The Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, Booker T & The MG’S, and more.

5 PM to 7 PM, The Retro Cocktail Hour Christmas Party -You'll cha cha all the way with an all Christmas special from The Retro Cocktail Hour. It's two hours of swinging bachelor pad tunes, crooner classics, over-stimulated stereophonic pop and tiki tunes for the season. Hear songs by Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee and Louis Armstrong; Billy May's insane "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Mambo"; the ultra rare Christmas jazz classic "The Swingin' Seasons"; a cool Yule with Edd "Kookie" Byrnes; a scratchy old 45 called "The Toy Parade" (otherwise known as the Leave It To Beaver theme); plus news tunes by Project: Pimento, the Barry Gemso Experience, Tiki Joe's Ocean and Jaymz Bee's Royal Jelly Orchestra

7 PM to midnight, The Glenn Mitchell Christmas Show – During his celebrated 30 year career at KERA in Dallas, the late Glenn Mitchell was known for his annual “Christmas Blockbuster” program, a marathon of Christmas music, trivia, spoken word, and quizzes. Enjoy this 5-hour collection of some of the best moments from Christmas Blockbusters past.
