The Permian Basin Area Foundation grants Marfa Public Radio $10,000 for signal improvements in Alpine

On December 15, 2011, Marfa Public Radio, was awarded a $10,000 grant from Permian Basin Area Foundation of Midland.

This grant will be used as part of Marfa Public Radio's next signal improvement project: a vastly improved, localized new signal in Alpine. In early 2012, KRTS Marfa will install a new radio transmitter on A Mountain in Alpine, simultaneously broadcasting their main signal from 93.5 FM on the additional frequency of 91.7 FM in Alpine.

The station hopes to fill in signal gaps caused by the mountainous terrain between Alpine and the primary KRTS tower outside of Fort Davis, at 93.5 FM. Marfa Public Radio is grateful to Permian Basin Area Foundation for contributing to this important signal improvement project.

2011 was a busy year at Marfa Public Radio. KRTS Marfa completed its power upgrade, and is now operating at the full power allowed by the FCC, at 93.5 FM. The station also installed a backup generator, enabling the transmitter to remain powered during emergencies, such as severe weather and outages related to wildfires. Additionally, the station introduced new local coverage and national programs.
