State's New Voter ID Laws seeing First Big Test in Primaries

Polling centers are open until 7 pm today for the statewide primary elections, and it's also the first big test for the state's new voter ID laws.

Governor Rick Perry signed Senate Bill 14 into law back in 2011. Texas is one of nine states seeing the first major tests of similar laws this year.

KXWT Reporter Lana Straub spoke with Secretary of State Nandita Berry about the new rules, and what voters need to bring to polling centers today.

To cast a ballot in person today, registered voters have to present one of the following approved forms of photo ID:

•       Texas Driver License – issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS)
•       Texas Personal Identification Card – issued by DPS
•       Texas Concealed Handgun License – issued by DPS
•       United States Military Identification card containing the person’s photograph
•       United States Citizenship Certificate containing the person’s photograph
•       United States Passport – issued by the U.S. government
•       Election Identification Certificate – issued free by DPS
