Texas musician Steven Fromholz is dead. The singer-songwriter was considered a founder of "red neck rock," the Texas version of “outlaw country.”
Fromholz died Sunday while hunting feral hogs near the West Texas town of Eldorado. He was removing his rifle from his vehicle when it accidently discharged.
The 68-year-old was considered a prominent figure in the outlaw country music scene that grew up in Austin Texas in the 1970s.
He wrote “I’d Have to Be Crazy” for Willie Nelson and “Bears” for Lyle Lovett. He gained cult status for his three-part song series called the “Texas Trilogy.”
Fromholz suffered a stroke in 2003 but remained an elder statesman of Texas country music. In 2007 he was named the state’s Poet Laureate.
