Thursday evening wildfires update

fire-110721-al-2

6:30 PM Update

KRTS has been tracking four wildfires around Marfa that began this afternoon & evening.

The first fire was reported at 2:55 PM, about 8 miles east of Marfa, on the north side of Hwy 67/90, about 2 miles north of Nopal Road. Many resources were dispatched to the scene. According to the Presidio County Sheriff's office - that fire has now been put under control.

Another set of fires are 8 miles north of Marfa and east of Hwy 17 - on the west side of the Ponder Ranch. Two of those fires are burning closely together. We spoke to a local rancher who confirmed these blazes, as well. Those fires have burnt several hundred acres, according to Martin Lujan at the Presidio County Sheriff's Department.

There is another fire burning about 5-6 miles west of Marfa, and 2 miles south of Hwy 90. Eyewitnesses claim the fire is not moving quickly, and that the wind is down.

Crews from Marfa, Fort Davis, and Valentine - along with State Forestry crews - are assisting with these wildfires.
