Thursday Jeff Davis County Wildfire Update

jeff-davis

KRTS has been tracking several wildfires in Jeff Davis County. According to Jeff Davis County EMS Director Vicki Fowler, the Livermore Ranch Fire, located west of Mount Livermore, has consumed 3,600 acres and is 50% contained. This is the fire primarily responsible for the large amounts of smoke in Fort Davis and the Davis Mountains Resort yesterday morning and afternoon. However, Fowler reported that winds were not blowing smoke into residential areas today. The Texas Forest Service has three task forces on the scene, and is currently using air tankers to drop retardant on the fire.

The Spring Mountain Fire is 60% contained, and as of this morning had consumed 4,400 acres. This fire is located north of Valentine, partly on the York Ranch. It’s up in mountainous country that's difficult for firefighters to reach. Officials are currently monitoring the fire. Fowler reported that the fire has been burning back on itself, or into rocky areas without fuel.

The McCoy 2 Fire has been out cold since yesterday afternoon. This fire was located to the north and east of the Boy Scout Ranch, which is along Highway 17 between Wild Rose Pass and Balmorhea State Park.

Note: We'd like to also commend the students at Valentine High School for their online reporting of this week's wildfires.
