City of Alpine Woes Continue, with Suspension of Finance Director

rangra-and-allen
Jessica Allen of KRTS interviews Alpine Mayor Avinash Rangra following a Lions Club meeting, April 2013.

There was more trouble in Alpine politics this week, when on Tuesday night, the city's Finance Director, Ricky Chavez, was suspended with pay. An investigation into allegations of document shredding has been referred to the Texas Rangers.

Marfa Public Radio spoke with reporter Alberto Halpern of the Big Bend Sentinel, who reported on the suspension on Wednesday. You can hear that conversation by clicking the link above.

Halpern spoke about the memo the newspaper received detailing the city's response to these allegations. They included changing the locks on the doors, securing the municipality's computer servers, and protecting the file storage rooms.

A recent audit of city finances started this firestorm, which led to the firing of City Manager Chuy Garcia and the hiring of interim City Manager Charles Harrington.
