Federal officials with the U.S. Department of Education have indicated that double-testing will be required for 8th grade algebra students.
As Texas Public Radio's Ryan Poppe reports, the Texas Education Agency had previously submitted a waiver request so that students would not have to take both an exam for Algebra I and another math test meeting federal standards. The denial is related to provisions in Texas House Bill 5, which reduced the number of end-of-course exams from 15 to 5 tests.
Andrew Peters, Superintendent of Marfa Public Schools, says the double-testing will affect a handful of students in Marfa who will be asked to take both tests.
