We see them all the time; vehicles from Border Patrol bringing agents to checkpoints and other intelligence missions. We've all passed through Border Patrol checkpoints.

Why is interaction with the Border Patrol a staple of  life in the Big Bend?

For KRTS News, Lorne Matalon explains that checkpoints are one part of an operation to protect a border many analysts say needs protection more than ever before with the hyper violent Los Zetas cartel active in neighboring Mexican states. Some citizens resent the presence of checkpoints and we hear a senior agent say that if citizens have issues, he wants to know about them.
