A series of brutal losses in the Trans-Pecos area kicked-off the six-man football season this week. Fortunately for most of the teams, all of the games this week were Non-League match ups.
The Marfa Shorthorns were defeated Saturday in their first game to the Klondike Cougars in a brutal 45-0 loss. On Friday, The Van Horn Eagles suffered a 41-0 loss against the Crane Cranes, while the Fort Stockton Panthers lost 49-0 to the Big Spring Steers. Senior Brandon Gilmore scored the sole touchdown for the Alpine Fightin' Bucs in their game Saturday against the Pecos Eagles, resulting in a final score of 24-6 and a loss to start off the Bucs season.
In more competitive football news, the Saturday game between the Fort Davis Indians and the Sierra Blanca Vaqueros, ended in a narrow 22-18 victory for the Vaqueros.
Cheerier news in the world of Women's Volleyball, as the Van Horn Eagles won their first match of the season Tuesday against Immanuel Christian 3-1, pushing their record to 1-2. The Alpine Fightin' Ladybucks split their two matches, defeating Presidio on Tuesday and losing to the Cooper Pirates on Friday. The Ladybucks overall record is now 1-2.
The Sul Ross State Lobos football team start their 2013 season against Texas A&M-Commerce Saturday at 6:00 PM. This will be the first time the two teams have played since 1975, when A&M-Commerce was still known as East Texas State.
