Marfa goes to six-man

gritandglory_6_man

In the 2012-13 season, Marfa High School will forgo their traditional 11-man football legacy to adopt the six-man football version of the sport. The Marfa Shorthorns will field fewer players and play on a smaller field.

Goodbye old rivalry with neighboring Alpine, hello new rivalry with neighboring Fort Davis.

Talk about moving the goalposts. And we will. KRTS Radio will be collecting comments on the decision, from commentators near and far. At a recent meeting, local support was strong. Some point to the faster pace of six-man games.

Author Joe Nick Patoski created the "Texas High School Football: More Than The Game" exhibit at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. Patoski hosts a monthly Texas music program on Marfa Public Radio. We hope to connect with him today at Noon. That's been rescheduled; we'll let you know.

Another KRTS friend, Laura Wilson published Grit And Glory: Six-Man Football for Bright Sky Press.

Also see the Big Bend Sentinel's detailed report from Thursday's newspaper.

Stay tuned and keep up with local sports results on KRTS!
