The Fronteras reporter focuses on demographics, immigration, health, politics, and Latino affairs in the Big Bend and Permian Basin region of West Texas.

The ideal candidate must possess all the skills of a modern journalist: storyteller, interviewer, photographer, and curator of content. This person will write, mix and file spot and in-depth news stories across multiple media platforms, with an emphasis on radio. This person attends Fronteras and Marfa Public Radio meetings and adheres to high journalistic standards.

This reporter works under the management of the Fronteras and Marfa Public Radio editorial teams. This reporter will be assigned spot news and feature stories by the Fronteras Senior Editor and will be edited by the Fronteras Senior Editor on features and by Fronteras news managers on spots.  Assignments will be coordinated with the Marfa Public Radio editorial team.  This reporter will attend the daily Fronteras editorial meeting by phone.  This is a one-year contract position that may include some remote supervision, and there may be travel and perils associated with this work beyond typical news assignments.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provides weekly coverage of West Texas and adjacent regions for the Fronteras: Changing America Desk, by filing radio spots, in-depth news stories, and multimedia content.
• Works closely with the MPR News team to coordinate Fronteras coverage on KRTS & KXWT.

• Assists the MPR News Director on coverage of its three main news goals (border issues, energy issues, and cultural & economic issues) in the Big Bend and Permian Basin.

• Helps to advance MPR goals as a vital regional news organization, both on-air and online.

• Participates in fundraising activities across the Marfa Public Radio network.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in reporting on issues facing the Southwest border region. Fluency in Spanish. Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or related field and a minimum of five (5) years experience in broadcast journalism, excellent writing skills, and superlative on-air delivery. Must have knowledge of the history of, and current issues in, the Big Bend and Permian Basin regions. Ability to work calmly and quickly under deadline pressure, including the ability to report breaking stories.
