This past week, 10 Marfa students completed a two-week theater camp as part of Marfa ISD’s Summer Shake-Up.

Led by Marfa Live Arts instructors Ellie Kenworth and Jennie Lyn Hamilton, the camp aims to expose students to new experiences beyond the classroom. Each morning began on the high school stage with relaxation, concentration and listening exercises based on acting techniques from Constantin Stanislavski, Sanford Meisner, and The Method. Students learned to make scenes, explore their characters and improvise. The participants rehearsed scripted scenes, chose costumes and props before finally taking the stage last Thursday to perform for students, teachers and family.

Summer Shake-Up continues this week and next at MISD with other nonprofit organizations, including Marfa Public Radio, the Chinati Foundation and SITES. The program also provides students a free breakfast and lunch.
