Winter Storm Recap; Power Still Out in Fort Davis, Other Areas

jesse-1
The Monday morning scene in Calamity Creek, south of Alpine, November 25, 2013 (Jesse Kelsch)

The winter ice storm that roared through Far West Texas this weekend left many electrical lines twisted onto the ground and plunged many Transpecos cities into darkness.

Late Saturday afternoon, Fort Davis lost their electricity. Marathon and Valentine also went dark.  Areas outside of Alpine were also without power.

On Sunday afternoon, the situation worsened. The city of Marfa lost electricity at 2PM and the city of Presidio switched to battery power, which would only last them until morning.

We spoke with Marfa Mayor Dan Dunlap, Presidio County Judge Paul Hunt, saloon owner Ty Mitchell, hotel manager Vicki Barge, bank employee Rudy Scott, and representatives from AEP Texas.

Marfa, Marathon, and Presidio regained power on Monday afternoon. Areas south and west of Alpine were still without power; so was Fort Davis, where concerns remained about the availability of water.
