A Border Patrol agent stationed in the Big Bend Sector of West Texas shot and injured a 22-year-old Guatemalan man late Tuesday night after federal immigration officials say the agent was "attacked."

A controversial Trump administration policy requiring some asylum seekers to wait in Mexico as their cases progress through U.S. immigration courts has now expanded to the Big Bend Sector.

While the increase in the Big Bend Sector is significant, the number of apprehensions here — which includes migrants surrendering to immigration officials at the border — still pales in comparison to the numbers seen in other areas along the border like El Paso and the Rio Grande Valley.
