Castolon Fire

The historic Castolon district has visitor services once again, nearly six months after a wildfire scorched through hundreds of acres in this remote corner of Big Bend National Park.

The Castolon Fire, which first began in Mexico and soon jumped the Rio Grande into Big Bend National Park, has been contained after destroying historic structures and burning through mesquite thickets for 11 days.

An area-nonprofit is looking to raise funds to cover repair costs brought on by a wildland fire that burned through hundreds of acres in the southern pocket of Big Bend National Park.

A fire that started in Mexico last Tuesday and jumped the Rio Grande into Big Bend National park is now 90 percent contained, according to park officials.
