The Sentinel has more on how the Marfa community is reacting to the tragic news of Madrid's passing:
[Marfa ISD Superintendent Andrew Peters] called Madrid a “very smart young man.” He was taking classes on the advance track for his new graduation requirements.
His football coach, Jeff Jones, said Madrid was a great student. When Jones would check on his players’ grades to ensure they were performing academically, he knew Madrid would come through as an A student.
“He’s one we never had to worry about,” said Jones.
(He) started this year on the Shorthorn junior varsity football team after he received a clearance to play, according to Peters. At six-feet, four-inches, Madrid was tall for his age, so Jones said he was working on his coordination.
His teammates will sport his number, #85, on their helmets at their Friday against El Paso Faith Christian in El Paso.
“He left a big hole in our team and in our hearts,” said Jones.
Andrew Madrid, a Marfa high school freshman, died on Sunday (September 28). It is reported that he fell ill and collapsed while playing with friends. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. He is survived by his mother Christina Aguilar, as well as his grandparents Fred and Linda Aguilar of Marfa.
Andrew participated in school sports, including track-and-field this spring in junior high, and junior varsity football this season.
On Monday morning, six counselors were on hand at Marfa ISD. School administrators began the day by debriefing staff and then meeting with the 7-12th grade students.
