Today, Americans are in shock after the unspeakable acts of violence committed in Tucson, Arizona. I extend my deepest sympathies and prayers to the victims, their families and friends. We know there has been senseless loss of life - including a young child not much older than my own son.
Congresswoman Giffords served in both the Arizona House and the Arizona Senate before being elected to Congress. She did nothing more than choose to fully participate in the American democracy. Because she chose to exercise the right of all Americans, she was ruthlessly gunned down. Now, her life, and that of her husband and two young children, has forever changed.
All Americans must recognize that while political disagreements and discourse are realities, no act of violence is acceptable, understandable or excusable. Today's shootings emphasize the need for all participants in the national discourse to turn down the radical rhetoric and rudeness and go back to the polite and civil discourse our parents expected during a family conversation.
I am confident in saying that my colleagues and I in Texas remain united against violent acts that jeopardize the very foundation of our freedoms. I ask that you keep Congresswoman Giffords and all the victims of this tragedy in your prayers.
