The Brewster County fire about 10 miles northwest of Marathon is now being called the Iron Mountain wildfire.
It started this morning, Monday, May 9. The fire is currently being managed by the North Carolina Type 2 Incident Management Team. This fire has consumed 1,200 acres. According to some officials this evening, the fire "looks huge" and is burning in tall grass and dormant brush.
Fire-fighting equipment on the scene includes heavy air tankers, SEATS (single-engine air tankers), air attacks, and lead planes.
