The Davis Mountains are home to birds that seems to be hybrids of Colima warblers — among the region’s most famous avian attractions — and Virginia’s warblers, which typically nest in more northerly mountains. Scientists are capturing the birds, to band and measure them, and to collect blood samples for DNA analysis.

The Colima warbler isn’t flashy — it’s mostly gray, with a yellow patch on its rear. And the Big Bend has long been known as the warbler’s only U.S. abode.
