A Midland Police officer was shot and killed while on duty, according to the City of Midland.

Officer Nathan Heidelberg was responding to reports of an alarm at a residence when he was shot Tuesday morning around 2:30 am. He died several hours later, according to Midland Mayor Jerry Morales.

Heidelberg along with other officers responded to the call and positioned themselves outside of the home. According to the city, the officers announced themselves and their location.

But, the homeowner still believed his house was being broken into and fired at police. The bullets struck Heidelberg above his protective vest. Officers at the scene then worked to “extract, treat, and transport” Heidelberg to an emergency room, but he died.

Heidelberg had worked at the Midland Police Department for five years and was currently serving as a Field Training Officer. The city’s press release stated Heidelberg was “respected by all who knew him.”

The incident is currently being investigated by the Texas Department of Public Safety and it is ongoing. In an interview with ABC Big News 2, Mayor Morales this was a “very tragic incident” for Midland.

All flags at city buildings will be put at half-mast until Heidelberg is laid to rest.
