It's mixdown time at Marfa Public Radio; the second season of the KRTS Youth Media Project is coming to a close!

Over the past eight weeks,  Marfa ISD students Crystal Cataño, Eva Guevara, Anissa Lujan, Jayne Nuñez, Michaela Serrano and Molly Shaughnessy have gathered at Marfa Public Radio headquarters on a weekly basis to develop their very own radio/video stories. With help from local mentors and radio and video professionals, our student producers have taken their pieces from the brainstorming phase all the way through to the final edits.

Project developer and former coordinator Alice Quinlan led the first season of the KRTS Youth Media Project during Winter of 2012-13, with the aim of giving teenagers in our area a platform to tell the stories only they can tell - a critical perspective on our community that we might otherwise miss out on. This year's Youth Media coordinator is Sally Beauvais.

Our students' stories range in topic from high school friendships to Marfa ghost stories to water scarcity in West Texas. Each piece will also feature a video complement, produced by local videographer Chris Hillen in collaboration with the students. Once released, the students' stories will be submitted to the PBS Student Reporting Labs website, where they may be posted alongside other student reports from around the country. PBS took the KRTS Youth Media Project on as an official Student Reporting Lab in March.

Our student producers will debut their stories at our official KRTS Youth Media Project Listening Party this Friday, May 16 at the Highland Annex in Marfa. The event begins at 7:00 pm, and is free and open to the public.
