Fall colors burst across the McKittrick Canyon every autumn. Amongst the dusty green of agave and cacti, the red berries of the Texas madrone trees mingle with the orange, yellow, apple red, and burgundy wine leaves of the big tooth maple trees.
On this week’s episode, Nature Notes takes listeners through this seasonal display that has made a hike though McKittrick Canyon an annual tradition for park goers.
McKittrick Canyon sits in Guadalupe Mountains National Park. The Canyon’s trailhead to is a 10-mile drive north from the Pine Springs Headquarters. The trail is rated as moderately difficult, and rangers recommend 3 to 5 hours to hike its length.
